The rapid expansion of interest in and development of HRBs suggests that fundamental data collection (as embodied by EHRs and PHRs) is the method that will gain the most widespread traction within the health system.  This method employs opportunities for patients and providers to maintain updated health data. It also provides possible, controlled, blinded access to aggregate population data based observational findings that may open up new avenues of study in regard to health care delivery and outcomes . . . obi jo

Expert says health record bank systems across U.S. “are off and running.”
Health record bank (HRB) “systems around the country are off and running, and with President Obama’s commitment for all Americans to have electronic health records, HRBs stand to play an important role in reaching that goal,” according to William Yasnoff, M.D., Ph.D., managing partner of NHII Advisors and founder of the Health Record Banking Alliance. These “systems are sustainable with four potential revenue streams, according to Yasnoff: subscription or sponsorship, consumer-targeted advertising, query fee with permission to support such things as medical or population health research, and reminders and alerts paid by such stakeholders as consumers and pharmacies.” While “the healthcare IT funding included in the economic stimulus package will likely help physicians implement EHRs…the HRB system can create a revenue stream for physicians as well.”

  1. HRB initiative calls the question: why not look to MSOs (i.e., management services organizations) as the JV (hospital/physician community) hosts for such a community wide enterprise? Only need to add other stakeholders (consumers payors, IT vendors, etc.) to dialogue…

They seem more agile that traditional IT hospital environments, and those MSOs that have survived the post capitation blood bath are reasonably well positioned to position to steward EHR/PHR/EMR demonstrations at the community level

Or perhaps, I misunderstand the intent here?
